The Invading Species Watch is a volunteer-based lake-monitoring program for aquatic invading species. It is run as a partnership between the Ontario Federations of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH) and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Its objective is to track the spread of zebra mussels and the spiny water flea. These unwanted species could enter Loon Lake by hitching a ride on a boat or boat trailer. Our lake is at serious risk of invasion because of the public landing.
In 2014, spiny water fleas were detected in all three samples collected from Loon Lake.
